One day, nine hours and a few minutes to go...

... til the year's biggest sporting event. And, as of yesterday, I am officially psyched! The Olympic buzz is huming through the city, the volunteers in their blue shirts are smiling at you from every corner, and -best of all- my school will close at 4:30 tomorrow! That means a bunch of friends, a nice restaurant/bar and a few beers for the opening ceremony! I'm quite intrigued as to what Beijing's own Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern, To Live) will be shaking from his sleeve. (Sneaky, preliminary clips such as this one only serve to raise expectations though, I'm afraid!)

I was also happy to hear that it will be Germany's own, giant Dirk Nowitzki who will be carrying the torch for our country.

Auf geht's Deutschland, and hao yun Beijing!

Bis dann,

Nadine

With the Games just over a day away, I though it was time to finally take a photo of that countdown clock outside my office!

Who is Ted Diesel? said...

[rant]Hi Nadine, it's your old pal, DrStrangeposter but you can call me by my actual name of Greg if you wish. I was particularly moved by this post of yours and applaud it. I agree with what you say here wholeheartedly. I am sick to death of Western media's attitudes towards China and the Chinese. It's nothing short of bigotry actually. This includes the purportedly unbiased BBC too. In particularly the tired old human rights angle. As i've been telling people all the time when I hear this banded about, I simply say, poor human rights record? Well, who doesn't? We humans are all culpable, few if any races, regimes, governments, dictators, ages etc... have ever been free of it...how soon we forget the Japan and Manchuria, Pol Pot, khmer rouge, Saddam, the Turks and Armenia, the list is endless. Singling out the Chinese is appalling and particularly unfair when they are putting on a games that will long be remembered positively. Anyways, just thought i'd contribute that.[/rant] Great post. Thank you for it. I'm glad you can see through it too, especially as you are there. Have a wonderful time through it and I hope it's an experience that stays with you through time and I am slightly jealous but mostly happy for you that you are gaining many things from it. I hope to one day as well. Yours, Greg
