I'm finally one step closer to stalking Tony Leung.

When asking my friend if she wanted to go for some after-work dinner on Sunday night, little did I know that the swish Thai restaurant we picked would provide the first clue in my mission to stalk my favourite actor, Hong Kong’s Tony Leung, or Liang Chao Wei, as they call him here.

A perfectly ordinary walk to the toilet revealed a wall full of photos showing celebrities who had dined at the place, and a closer look at said wall revealed Mr Leung in all his glory! Admittedly, the photo in question (an, ehm, photograph of which you can see below) looks like it was taken more than a couple of years ago, but it nevertheless serves as undisputable proof that my idol had, in fact, eaten at the same place as I did. Who knows, he may have used the same spoon?! Other celebrities on the display wall included actors Simon Yam and Eric Tsang, as well as Basketball giant Yao Ming. (I was going to take pictures of their pictures as well, but at that point I was getting strange looks from members of staff, so I decided to leave it.)

The food we had wasn’t bad either, the service (as provided by what had to be a ladyboy)- the only thing that disturbed me ever so slightly was the four huge and not fake alligators lying in a very shallow pond right next to the little bridge that leads up to the payment desk. Though the lady (boy?) insisted they were dead, that argument didn’t exactly explain why they still had their mouths sealed with tape. My crazy friend’s first reaction, of course, was “Take photo, yayyyy!”, but I wasn’t quite so confident.

Ah well- at least I did manage to get on Tony’s tracks. Now all I need to do is book that ticket to Hong Kong.

Beijing Star Spotting

As a massive fan of Hong Kong and mainland Chinese cinema, I’ve of course been spending the last few weeks on a lookout for famous faces, both on TV and around me.

So here’s my findings…

Even though she’s only got one movie under her belt so far, Lust, Caution star Tang Wei has already landed a contract to advertise Pond’s body lotion. Good for her.

Maggie Cheung is the (stunningly beautiful) face of Olay, while Gong Li is that of L’Oreal. Carina Lau is advertising a local shampoo brand (with a mad mane of hair).

Everyone’s favourite Hong Kong gangster Simon Yam’s face is on the outside of some massive, staggeringly expensive-looking housing complex in the city. Funny fattie Eric Tsang is lending his name to Spring Festival (Chinese New Year)-related sweets while heartthrob Wang Leehom (of Lust, Caution fame in the west) is doing both computers and mobile phones. Jackie Chan has got his name on everything from frozen dumplings to Olympics-related products, and Busiest Man in Hong Kong, superstar Andy Lau, is advertising some very flashy and very dear PDAs (and I nearly bought one when I saw his face on it!)

And just when I thought my favourite actor from this part of the world was the only non-sellout of the bunch, I came across this rather cardiac arrest-inducing TV spot… not the most flattering product as such, but the eyes! My heart pretty much melted away watching it- but then, it could have been the Sichuan noodles either.

Bis dann,
